Gone are the days when timber was dismissed as being old-fashioned and less durable than it’s uPVC or aluminium counterparts. Timber is now widely regarded as the best option when replacing your windows and doors. Here’s why:
Thermal efficiency
Timber has a low thermal conductivity meaning it doesn’t conduct heat fast. That’s why you wouldn’t want your frying pan to made from timber but it’s great for keeping the heat inside your home. This also reduces your energy bills.
Hard-wearing
The type of timber we use – Accoya – is a type of treated wood which has been thoroughly tested for dimensional stability, durability, paint retention and in-ground conditions to ensure optimal performance. This type of timber means that swelling or shrinkage is reduced by 75% or more compared to untreated timber *and it’s virtually rot proof. In fact, TRADA stated it has a 70 year minimum service life.

Customisable
Our timber windows and doors can come in any colour of your choice. Whether you just love a certain colour or want to complement your brick or stone work you can make timber window frames and doors work perfectly with your home and taste. We can colour match to anything from a swatch you like or a well-known brand. Of course, we also have a range of colours you can simply choose from if you’d prefer.
A long-term investment
“There's plenty of evidence to suggest that well-maintained, good quality timber windows can last a century or more.”
House Beautiful magazine
Timber has an average lifespan of 60 years. Nearly double that of its uPVC counterpart, which has, on average, 35**. Is it really worth compromising the classic look you’re after when you could be looking at your new front door or window frames for a large part of your life or passing them on to your children? Don’t forget the value a good front door can put on your house too!

Safety
Our doors are 56mm thick, giving them a good weight, a solid feel and of course, making them more secure. If glass is required in a door we use full depth, 24mm double glazing – the same efficient glass used in our windows. All of our doors and windows use multi-point locks as standard which require a lot of time, noise and tools to break into.
Our locks also have a hidden-attack lock. When it detects an attack it activates Lockdown Mode. A hidden firing pin stops the intruder being able to open the door. You can see an example in this short film.
Water resistant
Old-fashioned designs in windows meant water sat at the bottom of a window pane – we use chamfered mouldings on the outside so that the window does not hold water, enhancing the life of the paint and protecting your timber frame. Secondary seals are also built into most of our designs to protect you and your home from cold weather and rain (we would simply talk to you about when this might not be appropriate). Don’t worry though, all these things are subtle features which help to drain water without compromising on the style or look of the window or door.
It may be a requirement
If you live in a listed building, national park or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty you may have no choice but to use timber to comply with planning approval and building regulations. We’ve written a whole blogpost about that here. Hopefully by this point though, you feel reassured it is a great choice!
We also supply uPVC and aluminium windows and doors but as we make our timber products on site ourselves we feel passionate about this incredible material. Everyone has different needs so whatever material your interested in, give us a call so we can help you achieve what’s right for your home.
